Para Para, Lutheran church benefit from heritage grants
1 min read

TWO State Heritage-listed properties in Gawler and one in Kapunda have snared funding in the State Government’s third round of the SA Heritage Grants Program.

They are among 21 projects in South Australia that will share in $250,000 to conserve the significant sites.

Gawler’s historical sites up for restoration are the famous Para Para mansion in Gawler West and the Gawler Lutheran Church.

Para Para received $1900 for documentation for the repair of the mansion’s grand staircase, while $4306 will be spent on a dilapidation survey and report for the Lutheran church.

Further north at Kapunda, $10,000 will be used to perform conservation work on the Kapunda Railway Station site.

Across the three rounds of funding, the Government has awarded $750,000, unlocking almost $9 million worth of conservation work around South Australia.

Environment Minister David Speirs said the winning projects were selected by a panel of heritage architects and experts based on a set of criteria.

“A diverse range of projects has received funding in this most recent round, including churches, hotels and wineries, both in metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia,” he said.

“These projects will not only protect and preserve our state’s built heritage but it will help better activate some of these sites which is a key part of our recently released Heritage Tourism Strategy.”

Mr Speirs said more than 230 applications had been received for grants across the three rounds of the program.

Under the program, up to $5000 is available for simple projects, $10,000 for complex ones and $20,000 for major projects.

Heritage grants will cover up to half of the anticipated costs of conservation works or documentation, with the recipient responsible for matching funding dollar for dollar.

In some cases, in-kind labour and materials may be recognised as part of the matching contribution.
