Panthers put Central to the sword

ANGASTON dealt Gawler Central a harsh reality check on Saturday, destroying it by 123 points in Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football.

The Panthers were coming off a big win last week and continued to display their dominance, as they broke out of the centre just moments into the game and fed Ryan Carnelly, who opened the scoring.

Steve Summerton was dominating in the guts, as was Steve Rusca as Angaston had many targets up forward.

Central replied with a goal of its own from Nick Hooker, who converted a set shot.

Brad Mercer added another for the Tigers, but the Panthers were relentless.

Andrew Pech, Ryder Eberhard and Steve Rusca each kicked majors as their side took complete control.

The Panthers ended the quarter with Marc Borholm converting his first major, giving the side a commanding 49-point lead at quarter-time.

Central lifted early in the second term, with Sean Callanan kicking a goal.

However, after a lengthy wrestle down the midfield, Pech struck back with his second goal, reading the play well.

Tom Jackaman and Eberhard kicked back-to-back majors, and then Ross Kuhn kicked his first to blow the margin out to 68 points at half-time.

After an early goal from Eberhard to start the second half, the Tigers briefly wrestled back some momentum with a flawless passage of play from one end to another – allowing Andrew Wright to scoop up the footy and banana it through on the run.

This was followed by another show of strength from Mercer, who nailed his set shot.

Not being content with this, Angaston fought back with enormous on-ball pressure, with Eberhard snapping another and John Roesler dribbling it through from dead in front.

The Panthers led by 85 points at the final change, and the Tigers were in tatters.

Angaston relentlessly pressed forward with Kuhn  and Carnelly demoralising their defenders and snagging a goal each.

Despite a flare up from the Tigers, who were trying to stem the flow, Eberhard kicked two more snags in quick succession, bringing his personal total to nine goals.

Summerton finished off the day with a tremendous set-shot, ensuring the Panthers walked away as 20-goal winners.
