Panthers prevail

ANGASTON held off a resilient Willaston by 15 points to claim its third victory of the Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football season on Saturday.

The Panthers were terrific in the opening quarter, and found themselves 13 points ahead at quarter-time.

It looked as if it would be Angaston by how much, as it continued its onslaught to be 26 points up at the main change.

Young gun Dylan Tuckwell was dominant up forward, while Steve Summerton and Marc Borholm showcased their talents in the midfield.

However, the Donnybrooks fought back hard in the third stanza, and cut the deficit to just seven points at the final change.

Willaston’s Michael Howson went on a goal-kicking bonanza and finished the afternoon with six majors, however his effort would be in vain.

Despite Willaston having the momentum, the experienced Angaston heads steadied the ship and guided their side to victory.

Angaston player-coach Jay Shannon said he was satisfied to get the two premiership points.

“It got a bit tight there in the later stages,” he said.

“Willaston came out after half-time switched on and they probably ran us off our legs.

“Their spread was quick, their skills were great going forward.

“Credit to them, it wasn’t that we dropped off – they were playing some good footy.

“We couldn’t stop their run and slow it down.”

Tuckwell finished the afternoon with four goals, and Shannon was quick to praise the small forward.

“He was fantastic, I’ve spoken to him about his game; it doesn’t have to always be about kicking goals,” he said.

“His forward pressure up there is why he ended up in the best players, not so much for kicking the goals.”

Unfortunately for the Panthers, they will be without Riley Argent who sprained his ankle and will miss a few weeks, while Jake Hood and Steve Rusca finished the game on the bench.

Regardless, Shannon expects the duo to be fine for his side’s clash with Barossa District after the bye in two weeks’ time.

“We’ll have a bit of a lighter week this week, we have some sore bodies,” he said.

“We’ll make sure we can get some blokes back on the track.

“Barossa won comfortably and like this league is, there’s no easy games; it’ll be another tough game.

“The bye came to us at a good time.”
