Panthers, Pies tough to split
2 min read

TANUNDA and Angaston will do battle on Saturday for the Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade premiership 10 years after they last met in the decider.

The two teams have been the best all season, having dropped one game each throughout the home and away season – to each other.

The Magpies beat the Panthers when they last met in the second semi-final a fortnight ago, and player-coach Dean Terlich said his team is fresh and ready to go.

“I think we’re ready to roll, having the weekend off means the boys are a bit fresher,” he said.

“We trained on Saturday morning to keep footy in the brain I guess and ramped it up again on Tuesday night.”

Terlich’s side were the runner-up last season as Nuriootpa claimed the flag, but the Tanunda mentor won’t be mentioning last year’s loss.

“I don’t think we’ll make mention of it, the boys that played will have that in the back of the mind a bit, it won’t be brought up,” he said.

While Tanunda finished second last season, Angaston was dead last with one win.

This season, it has been a complete 180 and the Panthers are in the decider.

Player-coach Jay Shannon, who joined the club in the off-season, said securing the preliminary final win over Nuriootpa was like a “weight off the shoulders.”

“There’s a bit of relief that we’ve made it to a grand final,” he said.

“We’ve played a few finals now, so hopefully those nerves will go away.

“We have plenty to play for now – in all honesty it’s probably been the best thing that’s happened to lose that game, to get a bit of momentum going in.

“We’ll need to play a bit better and maybe tweak a few things and we give ourselves every opportunity.”

Despite the Panthers losing the second semi-final, Shannon believes his side played good footy.

“The third quarter where we were unable to stop them kicking a few goals without us responding was probably it,” he said.

“There’s a few positional changes we’ll make where people are starting.

“Our overall game plan won’t change, we’ve been playing the same way all year the way we want to move the footy.

“We need to back ourselves in to execute it.”

Will the experienced finals heads of Tanunda claim the club’s first flag since 2011, or will Angaston climb to the top of the mountain for the first time since 2003?

Prediction: Tanunda by four points
