Panthers close in on minor premiership
2 min read

ANGASTON is in pole position to claim the minor premiership after defeating Kapunda by 39 points in Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football on Saturday.

Despite the result, it was the Bombers who started positively, kicking with a strong breeze.

The competition’s bottom side rattled the Panthers early, and broke away to a one-goal lead at quarter-time.

However, the Panthers then kicked into gear and booted 6.5 to 2.1 to turn the deficit into a 22-point half-time lead.

Angaston playing-coach Jay Shannon and Steve Summerton looked on top in the midfield, while Ryder Eberhard was finding plenty of the pill up forward.

The Bombers came back hard however, and kicked 4.5 to 2.2 to cut the deficit to seven points at the final change.

Despite that, it was all the Panthers in the last quarter as they held the Bombers scoreless and kicked away to a comfortable win.

Eberhard finished the day with four majors, while Shannon had three and Andrew Pech ended up with two.

For the Bombers, Brad Prior slotted three goals to continue his terrific individual season, while Aidan Mudge also booted a couple.

Post-match, Shannon said he was just pleased to get the result in trying conditions.

“Kapunda started off pretty well with the breeze, and jumped us early,” he said.

“I think it was about a four or five-goal breeze to that one end.

“It was a really contested, strong game of footy…it was a hard-fought win from the boys.”

Following last week’s triple-figure win over Gawler Central, Angaston has a greater percentage than second-place Tanunda by a mere 0.16 percent.

The Magpies take on Nuriootpa this weekend, while the Panthers travel to Freeling and Shannon said he’s just focused on getting the win.

“I guess we’ve put ourselves in a good position to get our percentage up,” he said.

“We’re disappointed we haven’t kicked straight in a lot of our wins.

“We’d love to finish top and have that opportunity, and we’ll go out against Freeling and try and get the win first and foremost, as that’ll be a tough game.

“If we finish in that top spot, we have the week off and have a crack at a grand final spot.”

The Panthers will also benefit from the return of Steve Rusca this week, after he was absent due to a personal commitment.
