BRYAN and Rhonda Nissen will have been married for 65 years tomorrow.

Their wedding was held at St Cuthbert’s Church, in Prospect, on April 23, 1955, having met at a Kings Ballroom dance, about 18 months earlier.

The couple’s first two homes were bedsits in Stepney and then Rosewater, before they secured a house through the SA Housing Trust, in the then new area of Elizabeth North.

They purchased their first house at Parafield Gardens but then went on to build six new houses throughout their marriage.

For many years Rhonda worked at D and J Fowler (Lion Company) in Adelaide, while Bryan went from driving trucks to being a ministerial and Commonwealth driver – driving Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their visits to South Australia were a highlight.

They moved to Hillier Park 24 years ago, and enjoyed many long drives together around Australia during their retirement.

Bryan now lives in Gawler and Rhonda has been at the Regis Playford nursing home, in Davoren Park, for the past seven years.

Bryan, 83, said he usually visits Rhonda, 86, almost every other day, enjoying quiet time together or short walks.

“She has been a beautiful wife,” he said.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have her and that is the gospel truth.”

Of late the pair have been unable to see each other due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, however Bryan said he will still be making sure she receives a gift and a bunch of roses tomorrow.

The pair had two children, Mark (since passed) and Lisa, and now have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
