Oscar’s our leap year baby
1 min read

NEW Gawler East parents Meyrl and Josh Schiller had joked they could have a leap year baby when told the due date for their first child was February 25.

After some time in hospital, Mrs Schiller was booked in to be induced yesterday, but instead, she gave birth to little Oscar at 11.26pm on Saturday night, making him Gawler Health Service’s only leap year baby.

Oscar came into the world weighing 3.6kg and measuring 49cm.

His mum said he was already looking like “a bit of a dude already”.

“Some moments you’re just overjoyed, and then you have days like yesterday (Sunday), which was my recovery day, where it can get a bit emotional,” she said.

Mr Schiller said it was “very exciting” to see the birth of their first child.

“He’s got a good personality already,” he said.

“We had a check-up on Friday and for medical reason we started the induction on Friday night, which they don’t usually do.

“We thought here we go, it’s probably going to be a leap year baby.

“Then the induction started taking a long time and we thought we might miss it and hit March 1. But then for medical reasons again we had to have a caesarean section just before 11.30pm.

“It definitely wasn’t planned.”

The last time February 29 appeared on the calendar, five babies were born at the Gawler Health Service, with The Bunyip celebrating their “first” birthday in last week’s edition.

Speaking about which day Oscar will celebrate his birthday, February 28 or March 1, Mr Schiller said it was yet to cross his mind.

“He’s only going to have a date to celebrate commemorate his birth every four years, but he’ll still be the same amount of years old,” he said.
