THREE local establishments in Gawler will live stream Australia Day celebrations as a part of Gawler Council’s and Gawler Apex Club’s ‘Virtual Australia Day Breakfast’.

The Exchange Hotel, the Kingsford Hotel and the Prince Albert Hotel will all be open to broadcast the council’s Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremonies on their big screens, and local service clubs will be involved by cooking a free breakfast at the three locations.

Gawler Mayor Karen Redman said it’s a great concept out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think from something really ordinary like COVID-19, we’ve put our heads together and come up with a creative event and I’d like to congratulate APEX (on the idea),” she said.

“They came up with the idea and it’s quite innovative, it’s COVID-safe and I think everyone’s going to have a great time.

“It’s great to have our local businesses on board too; the three hotels, the Exchange Hotel, the Prince Albert and the Kingsford.

“We had a conversation around cancelling the carols and then we (questioned) what do we do?

“It’s new and you should never be afraid to try something new.”

Gawler Council also announced Dr Naomi Rutten as its Australia Day Ambassador for 2021.

“Naomi’s passion is around healing the effects of trauma and abuse experienced in childhood, adolescence and adulthood and is excited to take this opportunity to raise awareness and improve mental health services in Gawler,” Ms Redman said.

Dr Rutten will be speaking at the awards about her work and contribution to the community.

Council said it acknowledges the importance of celebrating those who have been especially involved with going the extra mile for the community as well as welcoming and rejoicing new Australian citizens who will be officially presented on the day.

“Council is committed to encouraging involvement in community life and feel honoured that we have so many people in our midst making a positive contribution to Gawler and the wider region,” Ms Redman said.

Breakfast service will start at 8am with the official ceremonies being broadcast from 8.30am. The morning is estimated to conclude at approximately 9.30am.
