Mixed bag for Gawler bowlers

Phil Marsden

DESPITE suffering a big loss to home side Modbury, Gawler's division one metropolitan bowls team managed to grab two rink wins and banked four points for its efforts.
With the fours of Leigh Roberts and Phil Marsden both six-shot winners, there is enough to suggest that they are prepared to scrap for every point in a desperate attempt to stay in this division.
In a continuation of good recent form where it pushed top-four teams in successive weeks, the division four side turned it on against fifth placed Salisbury with a huge 41-shot victory.
With three big rink wins, Gawler took 14 of the 16 points on offer to completely demoralise the higher placed visitors.
Dawn Warland's crew were 13-shot winners, Kay Moncrieff guided her charges to finish 17 shots up, and the four of Peter Rogers, David Moncrieff, Gordon Nussey and reinvigorated skipper Pop McConnell were outstanding with an impressive 33-12 score line.
The division five team put in a great performance to get within three shots of top team Penfield.
Splitting the rinks 2-2, Gawler put the wind up the visitors who have only lost one game for the season.
The fours of Margie May and Kingsley Branson both led their crews to tight wins and the resultant four points was enough to see their side hang on to fifth spot on the ladder.
Gawler’s division six team was outplayed by home side Two Wells, finishing down by 30 shots.
With different combinations each week it is hard for this team to settle, but it will take wins where it can and the four of Houghton, Higgins, Cousins and skipper Hamilton provided it, taking their rink by 10 shots.
A hard fought, two-shot away win against Payneham sees Gawler's Thursday division one ladies clinging to fifth spot and in a scrap for a finals berth.
In a largely unpredictable competition with positions changing weekly, the nine points for a game on the road are significant.
It was one way traffic for the division three team, but unfortunately it was going against the flow when it travelled to Salisbury.
With no rink getting close, Gawler suffered a 41-shot loss to the second placed home side.
