Mighty first half pinches winning break for Kapunda

LIAM PHILLIPS
KAPUNDA strengthened its
hold on the fourth and final
Barossa, Light & Gawler Netball
Association Senior 1 finals
spot with a 46-32 win against a
Willaston side that has proven itself
as far from an easy-beat this
season.
Kapunda coach Dan Roe said his
side was heavily focused on building
good habits at this time of year,
and that it was pleasing to see his
players’ attention to detail.
“The main message has been that
we can’t have these little two or
three minute lapses,” he said.
“When you’re playing against
the bottom sides, they’re not going
to punish you, but against the sides
we’re hoping to play in finals, we
know those two or three minutes
can lose you a game.
“We played a good first
half against Willaston – our first
two quarters really set us up well
to hold them off when their run
came.
“I think we drew the third quarter,
so they definitely came out ready to
play in the second half, but our early
work meant we weren’t in any real
danger.”
The Bombers were missing Chloe
Dabrowski, which forced a number
of players into different roles, and
Roe said they responded to the task
stylishly.
“We swung our goal defence
Anais Morris into wing attack – she
had spent some time in defence before
she arrived at Kapunda, and
playing in goals she was a good
candidate for a replacement wing
attack,” he said.
“So Caitlin Scott popped back
into goals, and she got a lot of
good looks at picking off balls
thanks to the pressure in the midcourt
from Tayla Meaney and Penny
Chappell who really slowed the
ball down. Everyone took to their
roles beautifully, and the pressure
Sam Matthews put on their goalies
was terrific as well – she had a really
great day.”
