Main st revamp consultation opens
1 min read

PUBLIC consultation on a major revamp of the Two Wells main street begins today, with Adelaide Plains Council (APC) still hopeful of completing the project by the end of the year.

At their ordinary meeting last week, APC elected members endorsed plans created by planning firm Jensen PLUS for the the long-touted project to be released for public consultation.

The council was granted $700,000 from the Federal Government in January to kick-start the project, which is still expected to be completed before the end of the year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

APC chief executive officer James Miller said the council would now progress with a “detailed design scope” for the redevelopment.

“I am thrilled that the elected body and the community have embraced this public realm revitalisation initiative,” he said.

“Through the wonderful support of our consultants Jensen PLUS and grant writer Jenny Fleming, we will deliver this much needed main street amenity upgrade for our community through substantial State and Federal Government grant funds.”

New landscaping, increased pedestrian crossings and renovations of existing shop fronts are all set to occur as part of the revamp, with the council applying for further external funding to increase the project’s scope.

At the centre of the town, in between the Two Wells Police Station and APC library will be an open-space area, described as “the village green” in the now public plans.

The space – expected to cost around $500,000 on its own – is set to include new picnic areas, community art installations, new shade trees, seating nodes and a new accessible toilet block.

APC Mayor Mark Wasley said government funding meant there would be no cost to ratepayers.

“I commend council staff for securing this grant funding for our local community, meaning that the $700,000 project will come at no financial burden to ratepayers,” he said.

“I can’t wait for the Two Wells main street upgrade to begin – an attractive main street draws people in. More people means more opportunity for small businesses and everything grows from there.”
