Magpies on top again
2 min read

TANUNDA continued its relentless winning run by defeating bottom side Willaston by 25 points in Barossa, Light & Gawler A-grade football on Saturday.

In what was a match that would’ve deterred neutral supporters, the Donnybrooks did their best in suffocating the Magpies’ run and gun style.

Despite that, Tanunda still gained the ascendancy and led by just a goal at quarter-time.

The Magpies got off the leash a bit more in the second quarter, and kicked clear to a 21-point lead at the half-time break.

Up forward, Stuart Gregory and Josh Trembath were proving to be quite a handful for the Donnybrooks’ defenders, while at the other end of the ground, Shaun Childs was in terrific form.

Tanunda eventually gained a solid 32-point lead at three-quarter-time, and the Donnybrooks had no way back.

Willaston won the final quarter by kicking 2.1 to one goal, but now sits at the bottom of the table.

Childs finished with four of Willaston’s five goals, while Jackson Phillips was its best on the day.

For the Pies, Trembath kicked three and Gregory had two.

Tanunda playing-coach Dean Terlich was satisfied with a scrappy win.

“It wasn’t the cleanest of games, but we got away with it in the end,” he said.

“They had a few out, their fire power was out of the game with (Michael) Howson missing, among others.

“They clogged it up and we struggled to open the game up.

“Once the fatigue kicked in, it was harder for them to keep the ball in the contest.”

“At the end of the day, I was happy with the result.”

Nathan Petersen-Gray played an inspired role for the Magpies, and Terlich was delighted with his impact.

“He was really good, he set it up for us in the first half,” he said.

“He’s much cleaner with the ball, the physical game suits him.”

The Magpies were hit with injuries however, with Riley McFarlane suffering from a calf injury and Aron Fechner copping a cork to his quad.

However, Terlich expects the duo to kit up against Angaston this week in the top of the table clash.

“It’ll be another close one, they’re playing some good footy at the moment,” he said.
