Magpies claim one-day crown
1 min read

AFTER pushing Angaston all the way on its Saturday fixture, Tanunda shocked the undefeated league leaders on Sunday at Angaston Oval in the one-day decider.

Magpie opener Trent Goers was outstanding, scoring 106 from 99 deliveries after his side won the toss and decided to bat, while opening partner Sam Colquhoun (44) more than pulled his weight to build the opening partnership to 119 before his wicket fell.

With a strong platform to launch from, Tanunda batsmen continued to contribute, including a strong late cameo from Peter Mernagh (30 from 21 deliveries) to set an incredibly strong 40-over  target of 6/232 for the Blues to chase.

Brett Woodards again showed his class with the ball (four maidens, 17 runs from eight overs), but was only able to take one wicket as the normally ruthless Angaston bowling attack failed to get the breakthroughs it needed.

The title was slipping away from the ladder-leaders early in the innings after opener Jack Miles (2, out LBW) and number-three Scott Rathjen (0, bowled) crashed out courtesy of Kyle Graetz.

Aaron Murphy (52) tried his best to will his side back into the contest, before Jayden Antonie (run out) and Dylan Schmidt (LBW) both fell for ducks.

As a number-seven who doesn’t bowl, Jack Henke performed as well as he could have hoped, scoring 69 from 60 deliveries to keep hopes alive, but his dismissal signalled the beginning of the end as the tail failed to wag.

Sam Colquhoun (3/50) chipped in late with the ball to snuff out any chance of late drama as Angaston fell for a very respectable 207, losing its first game of the season, in the first game with real stakes on the line.
