Locals get behind Greenock
1 min read

GREENOCK Football and Netball Club held its interest day on Sunday afternoon to gauge whether there would be enough support to re-enter the organisation into one of the local competitions in the future.

A committee of the club’s cricketers, led by David Coombs, commenced the re-birth of the Schlungers earlier this year, with the aim to play in either the Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association or the Adelaide Plains Football League.

However, BL&GFA president Mick Brien has dismissed the possibility of the club entering the association on more than one occasion, which has frustrated Mr Coombs.

“We’re disappointed (at his response) as all the hard work that myself and the start-up committee is doing, he himself hasn’t given us a chance to put together a package,” he said.

“I think his mind is made up and unfortunately there is not much we can do about that.”

Mr Coombs confirmed the club has 120 people signed up as interested parties, including 52 senior footballers, which would be enough to fill A and B grade sides.

Furthermore, it has also picked up 23 senior netballers, which would fill three teams, and the remaining numbers are shared across junior football and netball.

“Overall, (on Sunday) we would have had around 120 people roll through,” Mr Coombs said.

“We had a lot of apologies who couldn’t make the day, and with the weather we think it was a positive turn out.

“Thank you to The Greenock (Hotel) for making this day happen, and a special thanks to Alicia Coombs, Bek Henderson, Maz Barraclough and Kabrina Brook for all their help to make this day possible.

“I’d also just like to thank the people who filled out online forms and also for people braving the weather and showing their faces.”

With plenty of backing locally, Mr Coombs is still determined to have the Schlungers back playing in 2020.

“With the strong numbers I believe we can start something special,” he said.

“From here, we will put in a data base, apply to a league and we will see what happens.

“We are definitely pushing for 2020.”
