GALLANT grey mare Rustydustysunshine took her stakes past $100,000 for Gawler owner-trainer Ron Campbell with a game win at Gawler this past Wednesday.
Victory in the G&J Civil Benchmark 56 Handicap over 1100m took the five-year-old’s earnings to $105,775 with her ninth win from 43 starts.
Rustydustysunshine, who jumped at 10/1, ridden by Caitlin Jones, scored a half-length win from Pivotal Force (19/1) with another Gawler-trained galloper, Galcrum (12/1), three-quarters of a length away third.
Campbell told the story of purchasing the grey mare.
“I had a very good horse (named) Rusty Dusty Grey a few years ago,” Campbell said.
“At the 2016 Adelaide Sale I was with my son, Brett, and I saw this grey yearling about 100 metres away.
“I yelled to Brett that she reminded me of the old horse and decided to investigate more about her.
“I was able to pick her up for $13,000 from Ducatoon Park Stud at Kadina, and from the start she has always shown ability.”
Campbell thought Rustydustysunshine’s barrier draw of 13 would work against her on Wednesday, but jockey Caitlin Jones was able to get her across and into a good trailing position on settling down.
She took the grey mare to the front in the home straight and the five-year-old proved too strong.
Angaston training partnership Tony and Calvin McEvoy look to have a nice two-year-old in Kahaylaan, which had an easy win in the Terrace Function Centre Maiden over 1100m.
Backed from $1.50 into $1.30 favourite, Kahaylaan, ridden by Barend Vorster, dashed away to win by three-and-a-half lengths from Sabaku ($5.50) with Amber Haze ($26) a distant third.
Kahaylaan began only fairly, but Vorster had no hesitation allowing him to stride up outside the lead before asking him to sprint for home on straightening. Trainer Tony McEvoy admitted he is excited about the colt’s potential.
“He’s always shown up,” McEvoy said.
“He is a quality horse, but we haven’t pushed him. It was a very good win today, but he still has plenty to learn… I think
he might need blinkers (at his next Morphetville trial).
“If he comes through that okay, I might run him in the Oaklands Plate.”
The Listed Oaklands Plate over 1400m will be run at Morphettville Park on July 14.
