Niklaus brings up 1000 Virginia goals in win
1 min read

LIAM PHILLIPS
VIRGINIA rebounded from
an incredible collapse in
round one of the Adelaide
Plains Football League season
to post a strong 12.11
(83) to 7.12 (54) win against
Hummocks Watchman in a
game that saw Rams full
forward Brendon Niklaus
kick his 1000th goal for the
club.
Niklaus entered the game
with his tally on 996, and
slotted his fourth for the day
after a big contested mark in
the goal square on his way to
five majors as Virginia took
a five-goal lead into halftime
and never looked back.
Two Wells moved to 2-0
with a 16.9 (105) to 5.8 (38)
home win against Balaklava
as Tyson Richard led the
way for the Roosters with six
goals.
Luke Barnett also kicked
three for the hosts to find
himself in the best players
along with Ben Spiteri and
Patrick Binyon, while Gawler
Central premiership player
and Balaklava player-coach
Shane Moss was the visitors’
only multiple goal kicker.
Angle Vale is off to the
perhaps the best start in the
club’s A-grade history after
overcoming John Butcher’s
six goals for Hamley Bridge
on the way to a 16.12 (108)
to 10.11 (71) win.
Not to be outdone, Angle
Vale’s Rob Kovacic kicked
a mighty bag of 10 goals
on the day to carry the Owls
over the line. It was much uglier
for United on its trip to
Mallala, going down 2.2 (14)
to 27.16 (178) in a rough day
at the office for the Tigers.
Troy Algar, Bryson Keeley,
Jordan Kenny, Jake
Birchmore and Kieran Watson
all kicked at least four
goals each for the Magpies in
a completely dominant showing,
while Jamie Williams
and Jayden Watson kicked
the only two for United.
The biggest bag kicked in
the lower division came from
Blake Brunotte, who kicked
seven goals for Virginia’s
senior colts as the Rams beat
Hummocks Watchman 18.9
(117) to 6.9 (45) before suiting
up in the A-grade game
as well.
