Kapunda wall art up for national award
1 min read

ONE of Kapunda’s iconic wall murals has been announced a finalist for the Australian Street Art Awards.

The Lucas Street mural, by graphic design artist Danny Menzel, has been gaining attention on a national level and was last week announced a finalist in the ‘Best External Mural’ category of the Australian Street Art Awards.

The mural took two years (or about 1272 hours to complete) and was a team effort also involving Kapunda artist Mal Craig to develop the initial concept, locals Rob Grocke for site preparation and
Kym Menzel for graffiti coat, and a further 15 artists and volunteers who helped with the painting.

The final product depicts the mining heritage of Kapunda based on old paintings from the time, as well as notable people, such as Captain Baggot, Francis Dutton, William Oldham and Dr Blood.

The Lucas Street mural is one of 13 murals forming part of the Kapunda Mural Town project, which was selected as Light Regional Council’s Project of the Year award for 2021.

The Australian Street Art Award winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 2, on the Sunshine Coast.
