Jockey club welcomes prize money increase
1 min read

THE Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club will share in a boost in prize money following an unprecedented increase announced by Thoroughbred Racing South Australia on Friday.

The benefits of the new prizemoney levels will come into effect from September 1, with country, provincial and metropolitan grassroots meeting stakes all rising.

Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club chief executive Shane Collins said it was a “great kicker” for the club.

“On the back of TRSA’s announcement, the provincial clubs will all increase their prize money at all race meetings, which is an exciting announcement for the entire industry,” he said.

“What will happen on the back of that as well, the Jericho Cup qualification race will be a $25,000 race, whereas all other races on (Gawler) Cup night will be $20,000.

“It’s really exciting for the industry and our local trainers.

“Hopefully it’ll help stimulate some employment in the industry.”

TRSA chief executive Jim Watters said it will be a massive benefit to those at local level.

“Prizemoney, in particular at grassroots level, is effectively industry wages,” he said.

“It’s the lifeblood of the racing industry, driving investment by owners and participants, which is vital in sustaining and growing the industry and the employment it delivers.

“While increased investment in infrastructure and clubs will follow with the TRSA board now considering such, it was important to address prizemoney levels in the state as quickly as possible as we seek to retain our key participants.”
