IN OR OUT: school zone changes revealed
2 min read

THE proposed student in-take zone for the brand-new Angle Vale ‘super-school’ has been released, along with changes to existing zones for Gawler & District College and nearby Mark Oliphant College.

Draft plans show the new Angle Vale Birth to year 12 school zone stretching between Thompson Beach, Virginia, and Hillier Park and Munno Para Downs, for its senior school students.

The primary school zone is shared with a proposed expanded Angle Vale Primary School zone, located within the boundaries of Gawler Road to the North, Pederick Road to the West and Andrews and Petherton Roads to the South.

Meanwhile, existing school zones for both Mark Oliphant, and Gawler & District Colleges have been reduced.

Previously the senior school zone for Gawler & District College had stretched to Two Wells, Mallala, and Freeling, however it is now proposed to only include areas generally within the Gawler Council area, as well as nearby Concordia, Kalbeeba, Bibaringa, Hewett, Gawler Belt and Kangaroo Flat.

According to the Education Department, the proposed reduction to the Gawler and District College high school zone, such as the exclusion of Wasleys and Roseworthy, also reflects bus routes to Kapunda High School.

The new Angle Vale ‘super-school’ is due to open in 2022, on a 14-hectare site at 28 Riverbanks Road, catering for up to 1675 students.

State Education Minister John Gardner said with population growth in the outer northern suburbs of Adelaide projected to grow substantially in the coming years, this new school will meet new demand and ease enrolment pressure on neighbouring government schools.

“We are confident that local families and the community will embrace this new local education hub that will offer modern, state-of-the-art facilities for their children to learn in,” he said.

“Development of these proposed zones has been based on sophisticated analyses, which considers a range of factors including accessibility by road, current and projected demand, existing school locations and current and future housing developments.”

The school zone changes are now subject of a public consultation process, with neighbouring schools and education staff also given the opportunity to provide feedback.

Local member for Light, Tony Piccolo said he believes the proposed new zones raise more questions than answers, particularly in regards to the impact they would have on families in the region.

“Will the new zones split families up?” he asked.

“Will changes in transport routes have a negative impact on nearby schools, including the larger Mark Oliphant and Gawler & District Colleges?

“You would think the Government would consult with local Members of Parliament, but both the Member for Taylor, Jon Gee and myself have not been consulted.”

The final zones will be published on the ‘find a school or preschool’ web page, to help parents find their zoned or closest school and to plan for the 2022 school year.

Students already enrolled at a school will not be affected by any changes to zones.
