Improved effort from Gawler

IT was an improved showing by Gawler’s division one metropolitan bowls side on Saturday, despite it losing to Tranmere by 22 shots.

The rinks were split 2-2 courtesy of the fours of Daryl Kubisch and Ian Greenshields, allowing Gawler to record its first points of the season.

After starting 0-12 down, Greenshields’ crew showed the kind of resolve that saw it come from a long way back last week to almost snatch a win.

This time, it finished the job and stormed home to win its rink 22-21 in a nail-biter.

Meanwhile, a convincing 30-13 win for the four of Haycock, Cameron, Warland and Hatcher was the only highlight for the division four team, with Kay Moncrieff’s crew again performing well without getting across the line.

It won just one rink and fell to West Lakes by 14 shots.

The team now hits the road to face a winless Salisbury side with a good opportunity to put a win on the board.

Gawler’s division five team was unable to back up last week’s away win, losing to Clearview by four shots in a close tussle.

Kingsley Branson’s lads played a great rink, taking it 24-11, while Bob Gillies’ four also got the job done 19-16.

With four points banked, they now move on to face Penfield on their deck.

The division six side was unable to keep up with Playford in the away fixture, finishing 22 shots off the pace when time was called.

Margaret Marshman and her charges had a hard-fought 18-16 win, and Bill Anderson’s four was in it all day before succumbing by three shots.

With a home game against a lower-ranked Two Wells this week, Gawler will be hoping a win is on the cards.
