History festival axing ‘the right call’
1 min read

A LOCAL volunteer says the cancellation of South Australia’s History Festival for 2020 is “the right approach”, despite the hit to Gawler’s tourism.

Graham Tucker, National Trust of SA Gawler Branch secretary, last week told The Bunyip that although the call was “disappointing”, the safety of locals during the coronavirus pandemic is paramount.

The festival, which was scheduled to run from May 1-31 this year, attracts thousands of tourists to the region, with Gawler hosting around a dozen events during the month.

Mr Tucker said the Gawler National Trust Museum – closed during the pandemic for the foreseeable future – was due to host its own walking tour event as part of the festival.

“We had a heritage walk planned via the Gawler South area, and it wasn’t only just to do with the history festival, it was to try and out a special edge on the heritage side of Gawler for the fact we are trying to save all those contributory items from being tipped off,” he said.

“Hopefully the walk will still go ahead later this year, despite the festival’s cancellation.

“It’s disappointing because so many people would have put a lot of work into planning it, but for the sake of protection of people, I think it is the right thing.”

History Trust of South Australia CEO Greg Mackie announced the 2020 festival’s axing last Friday.

“Due to the uncertainty of the continually changing situation with the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is inadvisable to continue,” she said.

“The decision has been taken due to the limitations on numbers announced by the government of no more than 100 people at inside gatherings, the emphasis on social distancing and travel restrictions.

“This is an unprecedented and challenging time for everyone, but the health and safety of event organisers, patrons, team members, volunteers and our audiences must come first.”

Mr Tucker said Gawler’s tourism industry would particularly suffer during the pandemic.

“The Gawler Visitor Information Centre is closed at the moment,” he said.

“Functions are being postponed, events cancelled and large gatherings advised against.

“But it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
