High schools set for a disability support boost
1 min read

NURIOOTPA High School will share in a $10 million package delivering new specialised education facilities for students with disability.

The school was one of 10 public schools chosen for the State Government funding, which is aimed at providing 180 places in specialised education, in time for when Year 7 moves to high school in 2022.

Education minister John Gardner said the transition of year sevens into high school will see a greater number of students with a disability need support in the high school system.

“Without diminishing what is available in the primary school system for a smaller number of year levels, we did need to add capacity in the high schools for this cohort of students that will be coming through,” he said.

“This will support hundreds of students with a disability so that when they have a transition from primary school to high school they will be able to continue getting the same sorts of support and even better support than they have had before.”

Schools were shortlisted following a geographical analysis of the 2018 year three cohort of students accessing a specialised education option, to establish projected areas of greatest need.

A range of other factors were considered in the shortlisting process, such as schools with existing specialised education options, school culture, capacity requirements and student pathways.

Successful schools will now begin the planning process for their new facilities.
