‘Heart of gold’ – tributes for young father killed in motorcycle crash
2 min read

TRIBUTES have poured in for a young Evanston Gardens man who died in a motorcycle accident just metres from his home last week.

Jayden Sapwell, 24, was killed on Friday night after crashing his motorbike on Hindmarsh Boulevard at around 5pm.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the road, but Mr Sapwell died on the scene.

Road closures remained in place throughout Friday night as Major Crash investigators examined the circumstances of the collision.

Mr Sapwell was a young father of three and was soon to be married.

Friends and family took to social media to pay tribute to Mr Sapwell, who was described as having a “heart of gold”.

“You will be greatly missed by your three beautiful kids and families,” one post read.

“Taken way too young. I hope you’re at peace now buddy.

“I will miss our chats of cars, motorbikes and anything with an engine in it. Your cheeky smile and mischievous laugh will… never be forgotten.”

Mr Sapwell’s death was the third in a three-hour period on Friday night, after two people died in an earlier crash at Strathalbyn.

He was the 13th person to die on local roads this year and the 13th state-wide to die in a motorcycle accident.

Officer in charge of SA Police’s Traffic Services Branch Superintendent Bob Gray said he “couldn’t really think about many more tragic circumstances” than Mr Sapwell’s death

“He’s left behind three children and was a young man with his whole life in front of him,” he said.

“I’m calling on all road users within South Australia to please exercise the diligence and care you need to make sure that everyone comes home safely.

“These collisions are avoidable. You need to take responsibility for your actions and you need to be considerate to yourself, your passengers and to other road users.”

Superintendent Gray added regional road users were at particular risk of serious crashes, with 70 per cent of fatal accidents across the past five years occurring outside metropolitan Adelaide.

“I remind you that if you’re travelling in regional South Australia that 44 lives lost have been in regional South Australia (this year),” he said.

“Please be patient… drive to the conditions and if you’re fatigued take a break. But the main thing is do not become complacent.

“Driving is a complex task and it needs a significant amount of attention to be done safely.”
