Have your voice heard on Main Street project
1 min read

VIRGINIA residents have until Friday to have their voice heard ahead of the next stage of the $2.6 million Virginia Main Street Upgrade project.

Playford Council has been in Virginia throughout the past month running several different community engagement forums to get locals ideas on what the Main Street project could look like.

A community survey, available online, has attracted 190 responses so far and closes this Friday (September 19).

In addition to the survey, council held two ‘pop-up’ workshops at the Virginia Shopping Centre, three community workshops and a meeting with 19 Virginia Primary School students.

Suggestions for the Main Street from the children included fast food businesses, a wishing fountain, sculptures in Virginia Football Club colours, in-ground trampolines and a chocolate fountain.

Other key messages received by the Council during consultation was a need to upgrade the street’s drainage, plant new trees, fix footpaths, address safety concerns regarding pedestrians crossing the street, make the street more attractive and create a destination at the Virginia Institute Park.

Playford mayor Glenn Docherty said he appreciated Virginia residents’ engagement with the Main Street Upgrade planning process.

“We aren’t surprised in any way that the community has so positively embraced the consultation on this exciting project,” he said.

“Virginia is an important part of Playford and we’re excited to be receiving the views of residents about a project that will shape the look and feel of their home for many years to come.”

The upgrade was included in Playford Council’s 2018/19 Annual Business Plan and Budget, but was under a cloud until July, when council received funding from the State Government’s Power Lines Environment Committee to complete the project.

The findings of the initial consultation in Virginia will be available on the council’s website at a later date.

The council plans later this year to hold a public exhibition in Virginia to showcase the design concept for the Main Street Upgrade, with residents invited then to also provide their feedback.
