THREE school friends are banding together in an effort to raise money for Movember this year.

Thomas Fuller, Julian Armitt and The Bunyip’s own Brendan Simpkins are growing out their moustaches to raise money and awareness of prostate and testicular cancer as well as men’s mental health.

Julian said it’s something he does every year, but this year decided to get a team together – called This is not the greatest mo in the world, this is a tribute.

“I do it every year with a small donation, but decided to form a team with a few mates and go all out this year,” he said.

“We’re three washed up mid-20s blokes who all peaked in high school and applications are still open for any late bloomers who want to get involved.

“All three of us know someone struggling with their mental health and this year we wanted to really joined the campaign to encourage more men, particularly our age, to be more open with their feelings when things aren’t going right and actually seek out the help they need before it gets too bad.

“Especially in these uncertain times with COVID-19.”

Brendan said Movember was a key part of starting the conversations about men’s health.

“I think at first Movember was kind of seen as a novelty thing but over the years the foundation has been great in raising funds for men’s health projects,” he said.

“Most people now know what Movember is about and if you tell them you’re taking part you get a good response, but now it’s about continuing those responses into opening up discussions with family members and friends.”

Julian said raising money for mental health in particular is something close to his heart.

“I went through quite a bit over most of 2019 and the start of this year with depression and thought it was never going to get any better and are only just starting to recover now,” he said.

The boys are only 11 days into Movember, but Julian is concerned about his moustache’s current status.

“Usually I do quite well, but we’re off to a garbage start this year,” he said.
