Green guides Two Wells to historic victory

TWO Wells ended Kangas’
incredible 18-year reign
atop Gawler & District Softball
Association’s division
one competition on Saturday
with a 10-7 upset win.
Batting first, Two Wells
started strongly by registering
two runs during the top of the
first, thanks to Sally Green’s
home run through centre
field.
Joanne Pfeiffer was busy on
the mound for Kangas with an
assist to first base and a strike
out, before getting a hit to
help her side cross home plate
three times in the bottom inning
to grab the lead back.
Defence dominated proceedings
during the second
inning, with Sally Green a
standout on the mound for
Two Wells with two strike
outs.
Kangas maintained the defensive
pressure during Two
Wells’ third at-bat, managing
to hold it scoreless again despite
another nicely timed hit
to Green.
Kangas added another run
to its tally during the bottom
of the third, with hits from
Jenny Freeman, Pfeiffer and
Fran Huddy.
Green continued to dominate
on the mound for Two
Wells, setting the table for a
big seventh inning after the
injection of Nikki Ruediger
into the game, which paid off
immediately.
Two Wells piled on seven
runs during the top of the sixth
inning with hits to all parts of
the ground from Heather Baldock,
Ruediger, Amelia Benn
and Elise Goland to open up a
healthy lead.
Kangas needed to score
four runs in the final inning
to come from behind and win,
but Green was not having it,
claiming the final three outs
from as many batters to cap
off a sensational best-onground
performance.
The division two grand final
was a showdown between
Kangas Grey and Kangas
Blue, with the former prevailing
8-7 after a best-on-ground
performance from short stop
Natalie Wik.
Wik was busy at short stop
with two sharp catches early
in a back-and-forth affair that
saw solid defence on both
sides.
Blue held a commanding
7-3 heading into the last inning
of the day, and things
did not start well for Grey after
its leadoff batter, Amanda
Unger, skied a ball to Megan
Fairey at second base who
took the catch comfortably.
Grey then proceeded to
load all bases with some great
base running to score a couple
runs, before Wik crunched a
nicely timed ball past right
field, bringing in another two
runs to tie the score.
With runners on second and
third base, Stephanie Harris
showed nerves of steel,
squeezing a hit through the
left side of the infield and getting
her runner at third base
home for the winning run.
