Gawler’s top bowlers take their medicine

IN a shortened match due to the implementation of the heat policy, Gawler’s Thursday division one lady bowlers fell to top side Brighton by 23 shots.
It was another solid performance against a top-four team, but ultimately the loss seems to indicate it may be slightly off the pace.
The four of Clark, Goodrich, Skuse and Warland banked the side two important points as it keeps its final hopes alive, only three points shy of fourth-placed West Lakes.
The Thursday division three team was always going to be up against it when it travelled to Playford to play on a green that is soon to be re-laid for the third time in as many years.
With no other green in the competition coming close to the slow and tight surface, it is a case of play the match and move on as Playford ran out winners by 49 shots.
It was an improved showing by Gawler’s Saturday division two team, taking two rinks against top side Salisbury.
However, it was still a loss, despite rink wins to the fours of Daryl Kubisch and Phil Marsden which scored the team four points and keeps it within striking distance of the top-four.
After some lacklustre performances in recent weeks, division five Gawler Red made an emphatic statement with a runaway victory over top side Tranmere.
Playing in foreign territory, it took three of the four rinks and was a sizable 28-shots up when time was called.
Kay Moncrieff guided her charges to a nine-shot win, and the four of Wildy, Boucher, Pop McConnell and skipper Grant were outstanding in a thumping 37-8 domination.
Gawler White continued its push for a top-four spot with a fighting seven-shot win at Modbury.
Seemingly full of confidence and with consistent performances, the side is a genuine chance of notching a win every time it hits the green.
Shirley and Kingsley Branson both led their rinks to two-shot wins, but it was the four of May, Roach and the evergreen pair of Bill James and Peter Jones who did most of the damage, with an impressive 31-13 score-line.
Taking all rinks and maximum points sees the division seven team maintain an outside chance of snatching the pennant.
Only 13 points behind ladder-leader Croydon, it can do no more than win big each week and hope Croydon stumbles.
The four of Houghton, Ransom, Cufone and Hamilton were best in the 22-shot win, finishing the day 11-shots up.
