TURKISH newspaper Milliet is reporting two European powerhouses, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, are bidding with Scottish giants Rangers and Germany’s Fortuna Dusseldorf for the services
of former Gawler Eagle and current Adelaide United player Riley McGree.
The report, which had water poured on it by Adelaide United’s football director Bruce Djite as he claimed it was “news to me”, specifies that a successful bid will need to be in the range of $5 million.
Djite told The World Game that the club never envisioned being able to hold onto McGree longterm, and even used that in
their sales pitch to get him to the club.
“I remember telling him ‘we’re bringing you here not to keep you here for three years, we’re bringing you here so you can use it as a springboard to go on to bigger and better things’,” he said.
“In essence, it was part of the reason we paid a transfer fee to get him, we all thought it was a very good investment.
“He has got the speed, physically he’s very strong – he’s more than good enough to go to Europe…
In my opinion, he’s a legitimate national team player; that is clear.”
