Gawler View Club joins winter appeal
1 min read

GAWLER View Club is urging the community to help disadvantaged Australian children break the cycle of poverty by supporting The Smith Family’s 2019 Winter Appeal.

The Smith Family needs to raise $4 million, to assist with life-changing learning and mentoring programs for more than 10,000 children across Australia by June 30.

Funds raised through The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal will help children access a range of literacy and numeracy programs.

Gawler View Club president Daphne Philip said the club is pleased to be able to help disadvantaged children.

“We are so proud to be able to support and educate 13 students in our area,” she said.

“We help them achieve their goals, provide financial counselling and teaching them how to budget.

“We also have a lot of fun, and create friendships for children whilst fundraising”.

The View Club’s national president Jan Roberts said The Smith Family’s work reached more than 143,000 disadvantaged young Australians in 94 communities across the country in the last
year.

View is proud to be supporting The Smith Family’s 2019 Winter Appeal and we urge the community to join us in helping thousands of young Australians get the extra support they need,” she said.

Meanwhile, The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa O’Brien said research confirms Australian children from disadvantaged backgrounds are most likely to struggle at school.

“Sadly, the kids who most need the extra support to keep up at school are from families who can least afford it or who may not have the skills or confidence to support their children’s learning,” she said.

“The further behind they fall, the more likely these students are to disengage altogether.”

The Gawler View Club will be holding its next ‘Teddy Bear Picnic’ fundraiser on Monday, August 26 at the Gawler Arms Hotel.
