Gawler take-over a no go?
1 min read

BAROSSA and Playford councils are yet to weigh-in on a bold boundary realignment proposal that would see them each absorb large parts of Gawler.

As published in The Bunyip last week, Light Regional Council has made a submission to the State Boundaries Commission that would see the existing suburbs of Gawler be taken under the guidance of itself, as well as neighbours Barossa and Playford.

The proposal is the latest in an ongoing stoush that began with Gawler Council’s own push to take-in Light Regional Council’s Hewett, Gawler Belt and Reid.

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said his council had not considered any matters associated with boundary reform as proposed by Light Regional Council.

“Should a more detailed proposal be presented that articulates the benefits of boundary changes the council will give it consideration focussing on the benefits or otherwise to the community of Playford,” he said.

Meanwhile, Barossa Council intends to table the correspondence from Light Regional Council at its upcoming May meeting, with a staff recommendation it be received and noted.

“The proposal has not been assessed in any way and in council’s view warrants no serious consideration and utilisation of officer resources at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Barossa and Playford councils are also both subject to Gawler Council’s own boundary realignment submission, with the council looking to take Kalbeeba and the Concordia Growth Area from Barossa Council, and portions of Evanston Park and Hillier from Playford Council.

Under the plan sections of Bibaringa and Uleybury would be ceded to Playford Council.
