Gawler mayor hits streets
1 min read

GAWLER Mayor Karen Redman has hit the streets to support not-for-profit organisation The Big issue, helping a local vendor sell the magazine in the town.

Ms Redman and local vendor Ron Kerrison were on Murray Street last Wednesday spruiking the magazine’s latest release, which celebrated its 600th edition.

She said it was important to support an organisation trying to help those less fortunate.

“It’s a privilege to be standing here next to Ron and promoting what The Big Issue is,” she said.

“It assists people to get by and I think that’s it in a nutshell.

“Why would we not want to help people in our community that are trying to get by?

“It has a social purpose and a social outcome we should all get behind.”

The Big Issue is a magazine which is sold by vendors who are often jobless or homeless, marginalised or disadvantaged.

Mr Kerrison has sold the magazine around Adelaide, but will now be in Gawler for the next 12 weeks.

“I love coming out to Gawler because it’s such a nice town and there’s not so much of a rush,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if I sell or don’t sell, I just enjoy talking to people and meeting people.

“What I do sell, you don’t really make a fortune out of it, but enough to get by.”
