GAWLER local Georgia Mannion will travel to Triple J headquarters in Sydney to record her music after she was announced as the winner of the Unearthed High competition.
The competition was first ran in 2008, with the aim of starting the careers of musicians, and the 16-year-old Faith Lutheran College student was stunned to see Triple J’s Ben and Liam at her school on Thursday to announce her as the winner.
Georgia, who performs under the name George Alice, stunned judges with her song ‘Circles’, and she was delighted to have won the Unearthed High crown.
“I didn’t expect a win at all, I didn’t even think I would be a finalist,” she said.
“I’ve always been so heavily involved with music and felt like I didn’t have much to show for it.
“With the win, everything I’ve ever hoped to do can come true with the help of Triple J, so I’m on top of the world right now.
“I’m so lucky to have this opportunity.”
Georgia said her debut single was about being “really confused and lost with your feelings”.
“The ages of 15 and 16 are a really confusing time for everyone, so I think most teenagers can relate to the lyrics and the concept,” she said.
“This track was really an experiment I wanted to find a new sound, something a little less ‘boring’ and something people can still feel all the emotions through.
“We referenced Yaeii and some Tkay Maidzka for the production and the top line just came naturally.”
The Unearthed High competition win is the biggest achievement of her young music journey so far, and a career in music is something she’s aspired to have since she was little.
“My dad taught me to play guitar when I was really young, so ever since I started playing I knew this is what I wanted to do,” she said.
“After a few years on guitar I started singing, then picked up more and more instruments every year until my life was surrounded by music.
“I started playing live when I was 10 or 11 so it’s always been a part of me.”
Now with the competition crown, Georgia is eager for the next step in her career.
“In the last few days so many of my career goals have come true, or they’re on the way to being complete,” She said.
“At the moment I’m eager to learn more about my music, my sound, and dive into this industry deep while I’m still so young I have all the time in the world to explore.
“Hopefully there’s lots of new music, I write a lot. Possibly some live shows in the works too.”
