GAWLER East Primary School has been collecting bread tags as a part of the ‘Bread Tags for Wheelchairs’ program.

The program allows the collection of bread tags, which are then melted down and turned into bowls and then sold with all money going to wheelchairs for kids in South Africa who can’t afford them.

Gawler East Primary School student and Student Voice Group member Xanthe Trenowden said she’s been amazed by how many classrooms have supported the program.

“We made boxes and placed them all around the school,” she said.

“We went to all the classes and asked them to collect their bread tags from home and put them in the boxes.

“It goes towards the bread tags for wheelchairs program, it melts them down to turn them into bowls and they sell the bowls for wheelchairs to give to kids who cannot afford them in South Africa.

“It’s actually amazing how many classes have done this, I didn’t think we’d get this many.”

School teacher Anne Baldwin said she saw the idea done elsewhere and brought it to the students.

“It was kind of something I’d seen and I spoke to our Student Voice Group,” she said.

“Xanthe said she was happy to take charge on this.”
