Gawler Central looks to keep on rolling
1 min read

GAWLER Central’s Barossa & Light Cricket Association A1-reserves side picked up where the footy club left off as the season commenced on Saturday, claiming a first innings win on day one of the two-day fixture against Angaston.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Angaston only had one player – captain Luke Doecke (16) – reach double figures as Anthony Johnston ripped through the line-up collecting 5/16 from 11 overs of work to dismiss the visitors for just 56.

In response, Gawler Central number-three Jake Billing mustered 38 from 35 deliveries to bring his side to 6/86 before declaring to chase an outright win, and after 15 overs Angaston reached stumps at 3/30.

Light Pass showed no signs of rust, putting together a solid 204 total – with seven batsmen scoring at least 14 runs – first up at Truro to give the hosts something to chase after stumps was called at 0/6.

Dylan McIver’s 58 was the only bright spot for Willaston after it chose to bat on its home deck, with only two other batsmen able to score more than six on the way to a 109 total.

Lyndoch’s Ryan Muirhead (3/39) and George Clarridge (3/33) led the way with the ball, while Ben Williams (28) helped build a solid 2/50 platform before the day’s play ended.

Freeling rode the pair of Ian McMillan (46) and Adam Schmidt (41) to a 124 total after winning the toss against Eudunda-Robertstown.

Lachlan Cluse (4/40) carried the bulk of the workload for the hosts with the ball, and may have to contribute with the bat after his side finished the day at 3/45.

In A2, South Gawler batted all day at home against Gawler Central and put up 271 runs thanks to big contributions from Michael Coombs-Jury (71 from 60 deliveries) and James Nas (66 from 95 delivries).

Antonio Cufone (4/31) was the only bowler to make a real impact as his side prepares for a monster chase this Saturday.

In A3, a 60 not-out from Brendan Irvine helped Lyndoch to a first day total of 7/190 against the visiting Mallala, while Angaston will need to chase down Nuriootpa’s 148 after Tigers Ryan Tillett, Ryan Heinze and Phil Johnson all surpassed 30 runs.
