Gawler can’t get over AMU hump
1 min read

WITH Gawler’s women enjoying the week off with a bye, it was the Gawler/Trinity Old Scholars men who had centre-stage for their clash with AM United, with goals proving hard to come by in recent weeks at the top level.

Gawler Hockey Club president Chris Johnson said Jonah Williams and Pete Rowell had standout performances across the defensive line, with the side holding its opponents to two goals.

“It was a very evenly matched game with both sides tussling for control early,” he said.

“We took the upper hand in the first quarter through a great goal from Grieg Brown, but AMU fought back and grabbed both of their goals before the half-time break.”

Prolific goal-scorer Callum Munchenberg found his way onto the scoresheet for another week, as the second half finished scoreless as AMU successfully defended its 2-1 lead.

Nuriootpa and Tanunda clashed in the other A-grade men’s fixture, tying 1-1 after goals from Nuri’s Greg Schulz and Tanunda’s Alec Hutchins.

Those two sides also played in the A-grade women’s competition, with Nuriootpa emerging 2-1 victors thanks to goals from Rebecca Carter and Kim Pearce.

In B-grade, Gawler’s women prevailed as strong 3-0 winners of Nuriootpa courtesy of a Kelly Munger double, while the Gawler B-grade men took the club’s only result against AM United for the weekend, netting a 2-2 draw,

The weekend also saw the return of the junior grades, with Gawler taking a tight 2-3 defeat to AM United in the under-16s, and a 0-3 defeat to the same side in the under-13s. Johnson said the young side “put in their best effort for their first game and gained confidence as it progressed… there were some really encouraging signs to build on.”

Trinity College’s under-13 side nabbed the biggest win of the round, downing AM United Blue 9-0 with both Seth Taylor and Evan Streaker netting hat-tricks.
