Tanunda senior colts shock the Donnys

LIAM PHILLIPS
TANUNDA produced its
best performance of the
Barossa, Light & Gawler
Football Association senior
colts season on Saturday
when it toppled Willaston
11.9 (75) to 7.11 (53).
The Donnybrooks entered
the game inside the top-four
at 4-2 for the year, while Tanunda
was 1-4 and coming
off four consecutive losses.
The first half reflected that
form as only wayward kicking
kept Willaston from running
away early.
The Magpies trailed 3.4
(22) to 4.9 (33) at half-time,
but played arguably their
best quarter for the year in
the third term, more than
doubling their score to reach
three-quarter time leading 7.6
(48) to 6.10 (46).
The Donnybrooks ran out
of steam as the Magpies grew
wings, rattling off another
four goals in the fourth quarter
to open up the 22-point
winning margin.
James Rothe (three goals),
Hamish Martin (two) and
Adam Schiller (two) did most
of the damage on the scoreboard
for the visitors, while
Shannon Willis, Angus Arthur
and Thomas Bint were
Willaston’s standouts.
Barossa District retained
its top-of-the-ladder position
with a 10.18 (78) to 3.3 (21)
win over the winless Kapunda,
as Nathan Dyer moved 10
goals clear in the league goal
kicking race by bagging six
against the Bombers.
Finn Thompson (two
goals) and Noah Ralph were
the only Kapunda players
to hit the scoreboard, while
Bulldog Xander Bates was
named best-on-ground.
After a shaky first half
against an Angaston team
entering the contest at 1-4
for the year, Gawler Central
showed its class to pull away
safely in the third quarter to
win 9.13 (67) to 5.7 (37).
Max Gray spearheaded
the Tiger forward line once
again, kicking three goals,
with Cameron Logan and
Blake Marsden named Gawler
Central’s best.
For the Panthers, Myles
Harvey and Sebastian Heintze-
Unger were the shining
lights in the losing effort.
Freeling failed to kick a
goal in its home matchup
against Nuriootpa, being
wiped off the park 0.5 (5) to
13.15 (93).
Kane Materne (three goals)
and Kade Rohrlach continued
their excellent seasons for the
Tigers, with Redlegs Thomas
Daff and Owen Matz recognised
for their work rate in
a tough slog.
It was a similar story in the
junior colts, with Nuriootpa
beating Freeling 12.11 (83)
to 3.6 (24).
The Redlegs were held
goalless in the first half, before
Jaiden Rosie, Harry Oliver
and Cooper Reed grabbed
consolation goals late.
Hayden Schiller and Rohrlach
were the Tigers’ best,
while Josh Reichelt and Jesse
Kurtz kicked three each.
The division’s closest
match of the round came at
Angaston, where the Panthers
beat Gawler Central 7.7
(49) to 4.10 (34).
The Tigers actually
took a four-point lead into
three-quarter time, but a fourgoal-
to-one final term sealed
the win for the home side.
Hartley Eggleton (three
goals) and Harry Hayes were
the Panthers’ best, while for
the visitors, Jack Starr (two
goals) and Dean Saunders led
the way.
Top-of-the-table Barossa
District showed why it’s considered
a premiership contender
with a 13.6 (84) to 1.1
(7) win over Kapunda.
Dyson Sharp kicked six
goals for the Bulldogs,
with plenty of support
from best-on-ground Fraser
Charles-Broadbent, while
Max McCarthy kicked Kapunda’s
only goal and was
named best for the hosts.
The biggest blowout came
in Willaston, where the Donnybrooks
went down 1.3 (9)
to 20.13 (133) against Tanunda.
Mason Feltus kicked six
goals for the Magpies, with
Ryan Lane-Ellis snagging
four, while the only Willaston
goal was put through
by Justin Miller.
