Evanston teen arrested over grooming and child abuse material
2 min read

AN Evanston Park teenager was arrested at a train station on Thursday and charged with grooming and child abuse material offences, following a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Naim Anderson, 19, was released on bail on Friday after he was charged with a child grooming offence, obstruction of a Commonwealth official and possessing child abuse material.

A day earlier, South Australian Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (SA JACET) officers arrested Anderson at a train station, with police alleging he believed he was meeting a 14-year-old girl he had been grooming online.

The girl was actually a police officer posing as a child, with police alleging he had been speaking to her online since July.

He also allegedly tried to resist arrest at the train station.

A search warrant was executed at Anderson’s Evanston Park home, where police seized electronic devices they allege contain child abuse material.

Australian Federal Police Detective Acting Superintendent Gavin Stone said it was fortunate on this occasion that an Adelaide child had not been on their way to meet an adult who was planning to abuse them.

“This arrest is also a warning to any adult who wants to prey on children online – you may not be talking to a vulnerable child; you could be talking to a police officer,” he said.

“The AFP and SA Police work closely together, and with our partners overseas, and have a range of skills and tactics to expose you and bring you to justice.”

SA JACET began investigating the man’s online activities in May 2019 after a tip off from the United States’ FBI.

The bureau reported a person in Australia was having an online sexual relationship with a 13-year-old girl in the United States via social media.

Anderson was allegedly identified as person suspected of using the account.

A SA JACET Covert Online Operative then posed as a 14-year-old girl online and Anderson was allegedly soon chatting to her on social media.

The conversations with the covert police officer allegedly became sexual in nature and the 19-year-old kept requesting to meet in person.

In February, the Australian Federal Police- led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) received a report from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about an Australian allegedly uploading child abuse material to social media.

Police also allege Anderson was the person who uploaded the image.

Officer in charge of SA Police’s Public Protection Branch Detective Superintendent Mark Wieszyk said the JACET partnership between the South Australia Police and the AFP has been in operation since 2015.

“Since this time they have worked tirelessly at apprehending persons that prey on children, as well as identifying victims wherever possible so that they can be rescued from abuse," he said.

“Although demanding, their work is performed diligently knowing that their goal is to rescue as many children from harm as possible.”

Police are urging anyone who has any information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
