A LOCAL group has celebrated World Embroidery Day – and a hobby which gives them equal amounts of joy and relaxation.
The Embroiders Guild of South Australia, Gawler Branch, got together last week to celebrate the day with a lunch at Vadoulis’ Garden Centre.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic forcing some of the group’s members to miss the event, the remaining embroiders were determined to hold their annual event.
Branch treasurer Kaye Lucas said the sense of achievement one gets from finishing an embroidery project was what kept her interested in the hobby.
“Something embroidered on your wall or table is just so nice to look at,” she said.
“It’s relaxing and most of us all enjoy it. It’s therapeutic.
“When you do something big that’s all filled in its very rewarding because you have it up on your wall frame or on your table. It just looks nice.”
The group meets every two weeks at the James Martin Village community hall – part of the Gawler Community Retirement Homes.
It has been running for 35 years and anyone who would like to join can contact the Embroiders Guild of South Australia country co-ordinator Deidre Clark on 0429 208 160.
