PREPARATIONS for this year’s Gawler International Women’s Day Breakfast are well under way, with local Girl Guides working together to create table centrepieces for the occasion.
International Women’s Day, on Sunday March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality, with this year’s theme ‘each for equal’ promoting a gender equal world.
Gawler Zonta’s Pam Young and Maggi Gregory recently held workshops with two groups of local Girl Guides to decorate pots for the breakfast tables.
“We created quite a mess, but it was great to see so much creativity on display and a chance for younger women to get involved,” Ms Young said.
“One of the major aspects I value is the broad community involvement in our breakfast, local content and diversity of ages.
“Nixon’s staff are also very supportive of the event.”
Sue Cruickshank from Girl Guides said involvement in the breakfast was a “great opportunity” for the guides to interact with women in the community in a positive way.
Patricia Carter from Gawler VIEW Club said the breakfast provided an “atmosphere of fun and friendship”.
“The Gawler VIEW Club is proud to continue its representation on the organising committee for the Gawler International Women’s Day (IWD) Breakfast,” she said.
“The committee is a joint network of supportive local women’s service clubs to celebrate the achievements of women past, present and future.
“The Scholarship Awards presented at the breakfast are in keeping with VIEW Club values of supporting positive educational outcomes for students.”
The Gawler International Womens Day Committee is also represented by, Zonta Club of Gawler, CWA, Girl Guides and supported by Local Member Tony Piccolo, Member LC John Dawkins and Federal Member Nick Champion.
IWD scholarships are presented to a student from Gawler & Districts College, Xavier College and Trinity College.
The event’s guest speaker, Gawler woman Pamela Wittmann, will share her experiences from her duties in Afghanistan and other emergency situations.
The Gawler International Women’s Day Breakfast will take place on Friday, March 6 at Nixon’s Function Centre from 7.15am to 8.30am.
Tickets are $25 and available through Trybooking (https://www.trybooking.com/book/sessions?eid=591310). For further information contact Maggi Gregory on 0407 391 344.
