A START date has been set for the installation of a $3.5 million roundabout at the intersection of Womma and Stebonheath roads at Edinburgh North.
A Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure project notification released last week confirmed construction work would begin at the intersection in late 2020 or early 2021.
Construction is then set to be completed in mid-2021, with works to take place between 9am and 4pm, Monday-Friday.
“Speed and lane restrictions will be in place during the works,” the notice read.
“Road users are asked to use extra caution when workers are on site, follow the directions of traffic controllers and observe traffic signage and speed restrictions when travelling through the area.
“Access for pedestrians and emergency service vehicles will be maintained and there is no impact to public transport services during these works.”
A petition with more than 5000 signatures was presented to Playford Council in January last year calling for urgent action at the intersection.
Past incidents include a three-way smash between two cars and a truck in August 2017 which left a family in hospital and a two-car smash in May 2017 that left a woman in a critical condition.
The State Government committed to funding the roundabout in September last year, after the petition made its way to parliament.
Petition organiser and Playford councillor Peter Rentoulis said news of a construction commencement date was exciting for the local community.
“It’s a fantastic result for the community. It’s been a long time coming and we’ve been fighting for this through various means for a number of years,” he said.
“To have official confirmation now, I’m absolutely delighted for the community.
“Now we’ve seen some detailed design concepts, it gives me confidence its actually going to occur.
“I’m believing now that it’s going to happen and it’s going to be a reality.”
Traffic at the intersection has been affected by the construction of the Drakes supermarkets distribution centre nearby on Stebonheath Road.
