GAWLER Eagles suffered its
first loss in over a month on
Saturday when top-of-the-table
Adelaide University left Karbeethan
Reserve with a 2-1 win.
It was a defensive first half with
neither side willing to commit too
many numbers forward, with the
best chances falling to Eagles captain
Iradi Baragomwa, but his two
long-range hits sailed narrowly
wide as the sides went into halftime
locked at 0-0.
The deadlock was broken 11
minutes into the second half when
the Blacks’ Sam Bowman found
the back of the net for his ninth
goal in 13 games this season. Nine
minutes later, Bowman slotted in
his 10th of the season to make it
2-0 with just 25 minutes to play.
Musa Fofana pegged one back
for the Eagles in the 85th minute,
but an equaliser never materialised.
Gawler coach Andrew Burgess
was complimentary of the standard
of the contest against a team
he called “the most organised
team in our division”.
“What a game it turned out to be
– both teams were incredibly solid
all over the ground in that first
half,” he said.
“In the second half we were
dominant at times, and so were
(Adelaide Uni), and the first goal
came from a free kick it’s fair to
say the locals didn’t agree with.
“We looked to our bench to
make a difference and made four
substitutes at the same time. We
were asking for them to make an
impact, which Musa did with a
very good headed goal, but unfortunately
the visitors held on for a
deserved win.”
