Eagles complete stunning upset
2 min read

HUMMOCKS-WATCHMAN ended an 11-year premiership drought after upsetting reigning premier Two Wells by 35 points in Saturday’s Adelaide Plains A-grade football grand final at Two Wells Oval.

The Roosters went in as heavy favourites having won the past two flags over Mallala and Balaklava, but the fast-running Eagles posed a new challenge and were too good in the end.

Hummocks-Watchman coach Josh Gould said the Eagles faithful felt as if a weight had been lifted following the victory.

“It was a good win,” he said.

“To be honest, there was more a feeling of relief than anything.”

Earlier, it was the Roosters who got off to the perfect start, as Plains Producer medallist Ty Hocking kicked the opening goal.

After both teams missed chances and engaged in a tight tussle in the middle, Sam Roads got the Eagles on the board just minutes before the quarter-time siren.

The Roosters went into the first break with a two-point lead, but looked far from convincing.

But over the next two quarters, it was the Nathan Studham show.

The talented Eagle opened the scoring for the second stanza to put the Eagles in front, which was then cancelled out by Harry Gameau.

However, Studham scored his second directly from the restart, and ensured his side went into half-time with a four-point lead.

With the game in the balance, Gould said he encouraged his side to continue its work from the first half.

“We had more opportunities to score than they had, but we weren’t capitalising on them,” he said.

“I think we had a bit of run in our legs, late in the quarter.”

Despite Mike Knox opening the third quarter with a major to level the scores, the ‘premiership quarter’ belonged to the Eagles.

Studham added two goals within 30 seconds of each other, while Matthew Higgs added the side’s third for the quarter to open up a 20-point buffer at three-quarter-time.

Hummocks-Watchman ruckman Shaun Light was dominating in the midfield, while Jordan Bailey and Tait Nottle were relentless across the ground.

Andrew Hardiman kicked the first goal of the final quarter for the Roosters, but that would be their last goal as the Eagles ran riot.

Henry Wright snagged his first major of the afternoon, while Nottle and Bailey added the icing on the cake to secure the Eagles’ first flag since 2008.

Light was named best on ground, and Gould praised the big man’s work.

“He played that kick behind, he reads the play really well,” he said.

“Josh Studham and Tait Nottle were two of our best players, everyone did the job I thought they would."
