THE Gawler Doomsday Rollers be seeking revenge this Saturday at the Gawler Recreation Centre as it prepares to face the Toxic Cherries in the Rockabellas Roller Derby grand final.
The Rollers lost their first ever match to the Toxic Cherries three weeks ago by a point, which has the side ready and raring to go.
However, Doomsday Rollers’ Tanya Fielding said the loss will take the pressure off, yet make the grand final more challenging than previous years.
“I certainly think it’ll be more challenging this time, we only lost to them by a point three weeks ago,” she said.
“It was quite surreal (the feeling after a loss).
“I think because we are such a close-knit league, we were happy for them, but we were obviously disappointed.
“The pressure’s off a bit more now, we can go out there and have a bit more fun rather than expecting to win.”
The group has had a significant increase of players for this season, and Fielding said it’s great for the future of roller derby in the region.
“We had an intake at ‘Fresh Meat’ at the start of the year,” she said.
“We have about four or five new players come in.
“We’re all ready for the grand final.”
The Rockabellas Roller Derby League will hold its Gawler ‘Fresh Meat’ information night on October 1.
“We have Fresh Meat later in the year, and people can learn to skate, we teach them how to fall, how to get hit and how to give hits,” Fielding said.
“That’s the lead up for next year.”
