Dogs, Panthers, Bombers are premiers
2 min read

BAROSSA District has defeated an injury-ravaged Willaston to claim the Barossa, Light & Gawler senior women’s football premiership by 25 points in Sunday’s grand final.

The Donnybrooks entered the match undermanned, having lost Megan Boers and Toni McKenzie to serious leg injuries in the preliminary final victory over Tanunda.

Things went from bad to worse for Willaston in the opening minutes of the decider, as star midfielder Lauren Smith was brought down with injury and took no further part in the game.

The Bulldogs seized the moment, with Taryn Wills, Naomi Pringle and Piper Riggs dominating in the midfield.

Alana White was finding plenty of the ball up forward, and started kicking goals for fun.

The Dogs led by 14 points at quarter-time, and looked comfortable, while the Donnybrooks looked frazzled.

Willaston finally found the scoreboard in the second stanza, but not the way it wanted to, kicking just two behinds to Barossa’s one major to rail by three goals at the final break.

Jessie Sandford  finally broke the trend of Dogs goals midway through the third, but nothing could be done to contain the onslaught.

Audrey Kent and Georgia Madigan got on the scoresheet, and Barossa celebrated the flag in style.

Despite the Dogs’ domination around the contest, Shari Chambers was a bright note for the Donnybrooks and took home the best on ground award.

Angaston surged late in the grand final to defeat Willaston by one goal.

Despite trailing at quarter-time and half-time, the Panthers rallied to draw level heading into the last term, before pushing ahead for victory.

Kate Argent-Bowden had a big influence on the contest, while Jocelyn Stephens led from the front as captain.

Libby Fiebiger was best on ground for the Panthers and kicked a goal, while Tayissa Hayden and Allanah Phillips also scored majors.

For the Donnybrooks, Talia Laubsch was sensational in defence.

Heavy favourites Kapunda overcame a half-time deficit against Angaston to win the flag.

The Bombers led by 11 points at quarter-time, but were put on the back foot after Kate Argent-Bowden and Hayley Henke both converted in the second term.

However, Kapunda showed what it’s made of and dominated proceedings thereafter, kicking three goals to none in the second half.

Halle Butcher was terrific, while Liana Antonioli found plenty of the ball.
