Dogs eye three-peat after reaching big dance

BAROSSA District will compete in its third consecutive Barossa, Light & Gawler senior one netball grand final after it defeated Kapunda by eight goals in Saturday’s semi-final at Tanunda Oval.

The Bombers entered the game as heavy favourites, having gone through the season undefeated and knocking off the Bulldogs twice.

It looked as if it would follow the same pattern again, as Kapunda came out on top in the first half and looked in the driver’s seat.

However, after some swift changes from Barossa coach Katrina Frederick, the Dogs soon began to take control.

Kapunda couldn’t find a way back into the contest as the reigning premier showed why it’s a solid chance at a third straight premiership, as it sealed its spot in the decider.

Post-match, Frederick was delighted with the win, and is eager for her first grand final as head coach.

“It was pretty intense, the score changed a few times,” she said.

“It was a hard game, we knew it would be, we knew Kapunda would keep going and keep at us at all times.

“At half-time I had to make a change to put ourselves in front and it looked like that paid off.

“We’re excited because it’s our third grand final in a row.

“There’s still a job to be done until the final whistle on grand final day.”

The two sides met on the last day of the home and away season, and Frederick believed it helped her charges learn where they went wrong.

“That probably worked out, playing them in the last game; it gave us more of an idea of what we needed to do,” she said.

“We had two weeks to work on those little things we needed to do and got through the game, and played four solid quarters of netball.

“I think Zoe Hoffrichter played well at goalkeeper, she’s been playing goal defence for most of the season, but we thought we’d change it for Kapunda.

“Both our shooters played extremely well at the weekend, and I think our mid-court once we got our connections going, that all worked out.”

The Bombers will now face Gawler Central this Saturday at Williamstown Oval for a spot in the grand final, while Barossa can enjoy another week off before the decider.

“We’ll do our normal every day training session each week, the following week we’ll do a trial game to give us a good run,” Frederick said.

“That would be our plan unless something changes.”
