A GAWLER East family have been left “devastated” after the theft of priceless family heirlooms this month.
Between 12.30pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday, June 9, a house in Gawler East was broken into and a significant amount of property was stolen.
Cash, a large amount of jewellery and war medals were stolen.
The medals were contained in dark blue or grey leather-covered wooden box and included World War I and World War II medals, one of which is an engraved Distinguished Service Cross (DSC).
The DSC was awarded to Lieutenant Frank Wyatt, and is engraved as such on the reverse.
Lt Wyatt was a great uncle of one of the family members, and was awarded the DSC “in recognition of an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy at sea”.
He led his ship in mine sweeping and delivering supplies to besieged forces.
A large bronze World War I “death medal/plaque” in its original box, which also contained a signed letter from King George V, military photographs and lapel badges, was also stolen.
In addition, entry to a shed was gained with a large amount of Hitachi power tools stolen. Also taken were two BH Emotion electric bicycles with Topeak rear carriers valued at $4000 each.
The family did not wish to comment, but said they felt “violated by the robbery” and were grieving the loss of their “irreplaceable family treasures”.
Police are investigating the theft.
The family joined with police in encouraging anyone with information that may help the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
