Councillors slam road condition

PLAYFORD councillors are calling for an improvement to the standard of Harris Road, after the ‘completed’ works have left it ‘potentially dangerous’.

Deputy Mayor Peter Rentoulis and councillor Clint Marsh said the current standard on Harris Road is well below what they’d expect.

“I’d like to lobby for a clean, safe and tidy landscape in our suburban areas,” Cr Marsh said.

“Where we are is part of a growth zone where the current township of Angle Vale is growing.

“Harris Road was re-sealed, it was heavily lobbied by Jon Gee by residents here.

“Residents were appreciative of the effort which was purpose-fit.

“The attention to detail and the quality and the contractor has done with the resurface of the road where they have, in my opinion, failed to present a clean, neat and tidy street with their bituminising and they have fallen short by about half a metre.

“They can’t say they can’t do it, because they’re spots here where they have.

“It doesn’t meet what I lobby for… it doesn’t meet what our residents are lobbying for through their rates.”

Cr Marsh said a particular incident highlighted potential dangers of the re-sealing.

“We witnessed a vehicle using the edge of the new bituminised road as the edge, and it put it over the halfway line,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Peter Rentoulis said there’s ‘no good reason’ why the road has been left in its current condition.

“Ratepayers expect a minimum standard to be met with service delivery, they expect their roads to be up to a standard which is safe, clean neat and tidy,” he said.

“I’d say this isn’t fit-for-purpose, it’s potentially dangerous.

“People, especially out here, everyone is proud of the council and the area, and this doesn’t inspire a level of pride, it shows ‘we don’t care we’ve done a half botch job’.

“There’s no good reason as to why the road, in terms of the standard on this side isn’t consistent with this last half metre.”
