Council panel approves Immanuel development

GAWLER Council’s Assessment Panel has given the all clear for Immanuel Lutheran School to push ahead with a new three-storey education facility.

The Lyndoch Road school first revealed its plans for the $2 million development in September, which is expected to cater for its year five and six students.

At the Gawler Council Assessment Panel’s (CAP) meeting last Wednesday, the panel granted development consent to the school and the project’s developers Quickdraw Drafting.

As part of the development conditions, the capacity of the building will be 378 students, to ensure the school’s existing capacity for students is maintained.

In a report presented to CAP members, the building was not found to “detract” from the character of the Gawler Residential Historic Zone.

“The proposal does not offend the relevant provisions of the Town of Gawler Development Plan and warrants the granting of Development Plan Consent subject to conditions,” the report read.

“The proposed retaining walls are screened from view by the building itself, and do not pose any visual amenity concerns.

“As per the comments from Council’s heritage advisor, he is satisfied with the proposal and has not raised any heritage concerns.”

A small change to the height and shape of the roof and the roof pitch was made by the project developers to satisfy the concerns of council’s heritage advisor, who was worried about the visual impact from Daly Street.

“In the opinion of the heritage advisor,’ the proposal has adopted a visually cohesive language, and the amended heights, proportions and compositions of design elements represent an improvement’,” the report read.

Immanuel Lutheran School is hopeful the building will be completed before the start of the 2021 school year.
