ST Patrick’s Technical College staff got into the kitchen and served up around 100 meals for people doing it tough in the north last week.
As part of the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal and Catholic Education Week, school staff volunteered their time to help those in need at the Vinnies Elizabeth North conference.
The school is also urging its community to donate non-perishable food to the Vinnies’ Winter Appeal, with students cooking a free weekly barbecue at Fred’s Van, Elizabeth.
St Pats’ community, spirituality and identity co-ordinator,
John Neate, said the college took its responsibility to help others seriously and wanted to impart that commitment to its students.
“We want our graduating students to have a real concern for other people, particularly for those who are doing it tough in our community,’’ he said.
“The Skills for Life activity among the Winter Appeal and weekly Vinnies barbecue are excellent learning opportunities for all our students, and is an important component of St Patrick’s Technical College’s desire to put faith into action.’’
Vinnies Elizabeth North conference president Sean Yates said the charity aimed to provide food to vulnerable people every day of the year, and the students’ free weekly barbecue relieved pressure on Vinnies’ volunteers.
“We have people looking for food every day of the week and with the students supplying hot food every Friday, it’s something that is very helpful,’’ he said.
“It also shows the students what is happening in the place they are studying, as well as sharing the knowledge with them that there are support structures in the community, should they
every require help themselves.”
The ingredients for the meals cooked by St Pats’ staff were donated by the staff themselves.
“It is very unique to have purpose-made meals for people who, for whatever reason, are unable to have a hot, home-cooked meal,” Mr Yates said.
“It really cheers them and is so lovely, especially when they are expecting to receive a tin of spaghetti and receive a delicious meal.”
