SANDY Creek Netball Club will be looking to add to its already impressive trophy cabinet when it enters the Gawler & District summer netball competition for the first time.
The Cockatoos were founded in 2018, and have dominated the G&DNA’s winter competition, winning two A-grade premierships in two seasons.
Sandy Creek A-grade coach Scott Hill said he’s keen to see how his Cockies go against some of the summer teams, which include sides from the Barossa, Light & Gawler netball competitions.
“It’s fantastic, we’ve decided after winning back-to-back flags in the winter competition that we’ll challenge ourselves and go into the summer comp,” he said.
“There’s a lot of Barossa, Light & Gawler teams that fill the A grade and B grade, so we decided to challenge ourselves against them, it’s going to be exciting.
“We’re expecting to be challenged, we don’t expect it to be easy at all.
“We’re doing it to promote and expose the club to a wider demographic of people.
“We’re coming up against some of the better sides and it will tell us where we’re at, which is quite a step up from the winter competition.”
The club featured just one side in its maiden season, which claimed the premiership, and two this season in the A-grade, with its second side finishing runners-up following the home and away rounds.
In 2020, the Cockatoos are hoping to have five different teams, including their first-ever junior team.
“We’ll be expanding into a B-grade side, a C-grade side – which will be based around 16 and 17 year olds – and then we’ll have at least an under 11 side for juniors,” Hill said.
“If we get enough interest to get an under 13s and 15s, then we’ll do it.
“We’ve expanded from one side to two sides, we wanted it in two separate grades, but having them finish first and second after the minor rounds and now to grow into five teams next season, it’s incredible.
“We’re getting random people that have seen us play enquiring about when we’re doing sign-up days.
“The club’s getting bigger and stronger.”
The G&DNA season got underway last night with Sandy Creek taking on Mallala, and Sandy Creek Green facing United.
